K & S Accordion Band

Highlights of the K&S - pg 2

2001 proved another flourishing year in which the band won the Intermediate section in the IAA All Ireland Concert Championships in Limerick and were placed second in the All Ireland Senior Section of the Fleadh Ceoil in Listowel. To finish the year the K & S band had the honour of performing in the National Concert Hall in Dublin along side many prestigious performers.

In 2002 the orchestra took first prize in both the Northern Ireland Accordion Federation competition in Larne and the IAA All Ireland Senior Concert Orchestra Championships in Moate. They were chosen to lead the parade at the World Cross Country Championships in Lepardstown, where the band had the honour to meet the President and perform the presidential salute.

In July the K&S encompassed a seven-day trip to Sopron in Hungary and Austria in Vienna where they performed at concerts and festivals. In August 2002 the K & S marching band achieved another historic first when the marching band won the Senior All Ireland title at Fleadh Ceoil na hEireann which was a historic occasion as it was the first time that this competition had been won by a band outside the province of Ulster. The K & S band are unique in that they are the only band in the country to have won these two prestigious titles in one year.

In 2003 the K & S Accordion Orchestra won the International Music Festival in Limerick on St.Patricks weekend. The Senior Orchestra continued its success by capturing the IAA All Senior Ireland Concert Orchestra Champions title in Moate.

In 2004 the K & S Accordion Orchestra retained its IAA All Ireland Senior Orchestra Champions title. In July 35 musicians plus committee members from the K & S Accordion band flew to O'Hare airport in Chicago to compete in competitions organised by the Accordionists Teachers Guild International. The orchestra participated in the Junior Virtuoso Competition and gained an incredible 99 out of 100 points for their performance. In addition to this fantastic achievement solo individuals and ensemble groups won a staggering eight gold, seven silver and seven bronze medals.

The K&S had the honour of merging with 13 other orchestras to form the Festival Orchestra, playing to a crowd of over 800 in Milwaukee. The orchestra also received standing ovations in the Irish American Heritage Centre in Chicago when they entertained a full house of Irish and American guests. Fun activities of the trip included a visit to the Great American Theme Park aswell as shopping. Their achievements continued in Clonmel at the All Ireland Fleadh Ceoil where the band won yet again.

2004 was a special year for the K&S as the band celebrated 25 years in existence. To celebrate this, a concert was held in the Boyne Valley Hotel Drogheda. This was attended by past and present members who enjoyed a night’s entertainment by the current K&S.

The K & S orchestra’s most recent triumph was in March this year when the senior orchestra won the IAA All Ireland Championships in Moate for a third successive year. The orchestra scored an impressive 96 marks and also won an award for scoring the highest marks over the All Ireland weekend.

The success of The K & S Band can be attributed to their teacher Gerry Kelly, the hardworking committee and the support of the band members and their parents.
