Highlights of the K & S Accordion Band
The formation of the Kentstown and Seneschalstown Accordion Band took place in Seneschalstown Hall in 1979. In its 25 years of existence no one would have envisaged that a musical gathering would blossom into such success. The K & S Accordion band has become one of Meath’s most travelled accomplished and award winning organisations.
The achievements of the band began in the 1980’s when they won several local competitions. The K & S became firmly established in 1987 when the band won their first ever Ceolthas All Ireland junior Marching band title. In 1989 a travelling contingent of over 100 people consisting of band members and committee embarked on a twelve-day whirlpool tour of Europe. In France and Germany the K&S hosted major concerts such as the Frankfurt Flower Festival. Their tour of Europe culminated with a major outdoors-musical festival in Belgium.
In 1989-1990 the band entered competitions held by the Irish Marching band Association. In this year the K & S brought great honour to the country when they were chosen to play in the Royal Albert Hall in London. The bands performance in England was outstanding. Pontons in Southport was the venue for a week’s holiday for the band in August 1991 after a busy and successful season.
Wembley ArenaAfter winning two consecutive All Ireland titles in 1992 and 1993, the K&S travelled to Wembley Arena in England in these years to compete in a competition organised by the British Youth Band Association. On both occasions the K&S were victorious wining the overseas competition.
In 1994 the band began to compete on two fronts, as an accordion orchestra and a marching band. In the Exhibition Centre in Navan the K & S were triumphant once more when they won the All Ireland Marching band title and later in the year coveted the All Ireland Junior Concert Orchestra competition in Clondalkin.
Members of the K & S formed part of the 110 strong Cavalcade of Irish Music and Dance, which performed to a crowd of 13,000 in the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham at the British Military Tattoo festivals in 1995 & 1996.
In 1997 the K & S marching band were again crowned All Ireland Champions at the IMBA finals. 1998 witnessed the K & S orchestras’ victory at the All Ireland Preparatory championships.
SomersetIn 1999 the K & S band travelled to the European Championships in Mid Sommer Northon in Somerset winning gold and silver at this event and later this year obtained first prize in the All Ireland Junior Concert Orchestra Championships.
2000 proved to be a busy and triumphant year for the band winning yet again the All Ireland junior Concert Competition in the National Concert Hall in Limerick. The highlight of this year was an invitation to Prague in June to compete in the European Accordion Band Festival. The K&S was the only band from Ireland and the British Isles to be invited and were placed 4th out of 22 bands from all over Europe. The bands successful year continued when they won the All Ireland Fleadh Ceoil in Enniscorthy and were awarded Meath VEC club of the year.
